House Centipedes

July 5, 2008 | By Heidi | Filed Under: home | Leave a Comment

Yeah…I’m not going to post a picture because they creep the hell out of me. They are the scariest looking creepiest bugs I’ve ever seen LIVE…

YUCK!

I saw one of these bad boys in the tub the other night when I was up going potty in the middle of the night. Needless to say, I washed that sucker down the drain. It still gives me the heebie jeebies. *shudder*

We used to have them at our other house, mostly in the laundry room but I think I saw one in another part of the house there as well. But omg, the first time I saw one, it just freaked me right out! I didn’t have a CLUE what that monstrosity was, not that knowing makes it much better, but at least now I know what they’re called. I’d see them every now and then and never as close and personal as the one in the tub!!

Google house centipede. Go ahead click it. You know you want to. Look at how hideous they are. Share in my horror.

The bug guide online says this about them:

Consider these beneficial in your home, since they rid you of other pests.

You’d be lucky to get a good look at one of these since they run away very quickly when approached.

House centipedes are aggressive predators to things their own size but are not considered dangerous to humans. Their small jaws (actually modified front legs) cannot easily pierce human skin. In the rare event you were bitten, pain and swelling may result, but it would probably be no worse than a bee sting.

If you’re plagued by these, you should endeavor to rid yourself of their prey and attempt to close up as many entry points into your house as possible.

Well I don’t consider myself “lucky” to have gotten a good look at this hideous beast, beneficial to my home or not. I’ll live with the few spiders we have, thank you very much.

Hopefully I won’t have to see another of these anytime soon. But if you hear a faint, blood curdling scream somewhere in the distance, that’s just me coming face to face with another lovely house centipede.
