5 Random Facts – Michigan

I listen to a local radio station out of Detroit in the mornings while I drive to work. It’s called 96.3 WDVD. I really like the morning show, Blaine and Allyson. It’s a Top 40 station and they play pop music. I enjoy it, what can I say?

But the DJs make the station. They are hilarious and get along great and I love their banter.

Listening to them doesn’t make my ride seem as hellish as it is every morning.

They have a short segment of the show where they list “5 random facts”. I believe that they are just facts in general about random things…hence the name, right?

But..I thought I could list 5 random facts about Michigan and then keep this going about different cities here or just keep it all about Michigan…since my blog is about living in the Mitten!

So I bring you, 5 Random Facts about Michigan:

1. The state stone is the Petoskey Stone! For people living in Michigan, this is a given…we all should know this, but if you don’t live here you may not know. But they are really cool. It’s a stone and a fossil in one. We always looked for them on the beaches and sometimes we even found them! It’s been a really long time since I’ve found one though. 2. Indian River, Michigan is home to the largest crucifix in the world. It’s called the Cross in the Woods and it is seriously HUGE! We went there this past summer on the way home from my sister’s house and omg I forgot how big it was! We used to go there a lot when I was younger and my mom and her family when there when they were young as well. Photo below I took!

3. Michigan is called the Wolverine State, however, there are not any wild wolverines living in Michigan any more. Just in the zoo!

4. I read this one on BuzzFeed today, but I know it to be true: You have to travel South from Detroit to get to Canada via the Ambassador Bridge. Not everywhere in Detroit I’m sure, but downtown…crazy, huh?

5. The “World’s Largest Stove” was located at the Michigan state fair grounds in Detroit and in 2011 it was thought to be hit by lightening and went up in flames! Definitely sad to lose that monument. I remember seeing it when we went to the state fair when I was younger.
