House Centipedes

July 5, 2008 | By Heidi | Filed Under: home | Leave a Comment

Yeah…I’m not going to post a picture because they creep the hell out of me. They are the scariest looking creepiest bugs I’ve ever seen LIVE…

YUCK!

I saw one of these bad boys in the tub the other night when I was up going potty in the middle of the night. Needless to say, I washed that sucker down the drain. It still gives me the heebie jeebies. *shudder*

We used to have them at our other house, mostly in the laundry room but I think I saw one in another part of the house there as well. But omg, the first time I saw one, it just freaked me right out! I didn’t have a CLUE what that monstrosity was, not that knowing makes it much better, but at least now I know what they’re called. I’d see them every now and then and never as close and personal as the one in the tub!!

Google house centipede. Go ahead click it. You know you want to. Look at how hideous they are. Share in my horror.

The bug guide online says this about them:

Consider these beneficial in your home, since they rid you of other pests.

You’d be lucky to get a good look at one of these since they run away very quickly when approached.

House centipedes are aggressive predators to things their own size but are not considered dangerous to humans. Their small jaws (actually modified front legs) cannot easily pierce human skin. In the rare event you were bitten, pain and swelling may result, but it would probably be no worse than a bee sting.

If you’re plagued by these, you should endeavor to rid yourself of their prey and attempt to close up as many entry points into your house as possible.

Well I don’t consider myself “lucky” to have gotten a good look at this hideous beast, beneficial to my home or not. I’ll live with the few spiders we have, thank you very much.

Hopefully I won’t have to see another of these anytime soon. But if you hear a faint, blood curdling scream somewhere in the distance, that’s just me coming face to face with another lovely house centipede.

Smells like….Manure?

April 7, 2008 | By Heidi | Filed Under: home | Leave a Comment

My husband and I were finishing dinner and watching tv and every time Topaz, one of the dogs, walked by we got this overwhelming manure smell. And it wasn’t like shit…like a fart or dog poop or something, it was like farm manure.

We could not figure it out. What the heck was that smell, and where was it coming from? We had a window open, so we closed it and it didn’t get any better.

We finally realized it was the dog’s breath…but omg, what did he get into that smelled like that??? I checked the backyard to see if I can tell if he’s been eating his own poop, or if some kind of animal (squirrel, bird…rat, even) was dead in our yard and he ate that…but nothing.

I fed him a little chicken back to see if that would help with the breath. I don’t think it completely helped, but it was MUCH better than it was originally.

When I went to bed I still smelled the manure smell. I thought that maybe it was his breath still, because he was sleeping in the room with me. Then I thought maybe this smell is stuck in my nose…like if you smell something so much then you smell it even when it’s not there.

I ignored it and went to sleep. In the morning, I STILL smelled this manure smell…omg, are we downwind of a farm or something?? WHAT IS GOING ON???

I thought maybe it was me…but I was freshly showered and shouldn’t smell like a farm. I worried about it all day, but didn’t smell it anymore.

While I work I thought about what the heck was going on, but when I got home I didn’t smell anything, so I thought…eh, maybe a fluke.

I needed to do laundry so I went to the bedroom to get some dirty clothes out of this pile on the floor and I smell manure again!!!

FINALLY, I look at this dog blanket we have on the floor…it’s got something on it…EW…cat poop!! Then I get a flashlight and look under the bed…NASTY CAT POOP!!!!

YUCK!!!

So the blanket is in the wash, the poop is cleaned up, and hopefully my house smells of manure no longer.

That’s my story…aren’t you glad I shared it?? LOL

Spring is in the air!!

April 6, 2008 | By Heidi | Filed Under: home, michigan | Leave a Comment

It was a beautiful weekend here in Michigan!! Finally!!! My tulips that we got at the tulip festival in Holland, MI last year are starting to come up, the cats are spending their afternoons in the windows looking at the birds outside, and the dogs spent the afternoon on the back deck sunning themselves.

I love spring!! I’m so glad to see the white turn to green and the sun shining and all the flowers and wildlife. It’s like the earth is alive again!!

My supervisor at work has been bringing me in audiobooks to listen to while I’m working. I have really enjoyed all of the ones she’s brought in for me so far. I’ll basically listen to anything…so there have been some courtroom drama types, romance, mystery…they’ve all been very good. I’ll put the past 5 I’ve listened to on the side. A couple have been pretty steamy romantical types…which are always a good, fun listen.

Right now I’m watching that creepy Willy Wonka with Johnny Depp. The oompa loompas are so creepy in that movie. It’s just not right.

What else…not much going on really.
