Devil in the White City

May 1, 2008 | By Heidi | Filed Under: bookworm | Leave a Comment

This is the latest book that I’m listening to. It’s non-fiction and is actually really interesting.

Here’s Amazon’s synopsis on it:

Author Erik Larson imbues the incredible events surrounding the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair with such drama that readers may find themselves checking the book’s categorization to be sure that The Devil in the White City is not, in fact, a highly imaginative novel. Larson tells the stories of two men: Daniel H. Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair’s construction, and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor. Burnham’s challenge was immense. In a short period of time, he was forced to overcome the death of his partner and numerous other obstacles to construct the famous “White City” around which the fair was built. His efforts to complete the project, and the fair’s incredible success, are skillfully related along with entertaining appearances by such notables as Buffalo Bill Cody, Susan B. Anthony, and Thomas Edison. The activities of the sinister Dr. Holmes, who is believed to be responsible for scores of murders around the time of the fair, are equally remarkable. He devised and erected the World’s Fair Hotel, complete with crematorium and gas chamber, near the fairgrounds and used the event as well as his own charismatic personality to lure victims. Combining the stories of an architect and a killer in one book, mostly in alternating chapters, seems like an odd choice but it works. The magical appeal and horrifying dark side of 19th-century Chicago are both revealed through Larson’s skillful writing. –John Moe —

It was a little slow in the beginning, but it’s turned around and is really a good book. I didn’t know anything about the World’s Fair or Holmes, who was believed to be one of America’s first serial killers. I really have enjoyed the parts about the fair. All of the cool inventions that were there…electricity, Ferris Wheel, Juicy Fruit…

The two stories are kind of hard to keep track of at times, but I’m glad it’s not all blood and gore and killing…and that it has some history behind it. It’s definitely not something that I can listen to when I have work I need to concentrate on, but for the mindless work it’s perfect!

I need to cut this short…will add more later.

Mostly your emotions are on an even keel and you do not get depressed easily, however you are sensitive about what others think of you. Your concern about rejection and ridicule cause you to feel shy and uncomfortable around others. You are easily embarrassed and often feel ashamed. Your fears that others will criticize or make fun of you are exaggerated and unrealistic, but your awkwardness and discomfort may make these fears a self-fulfilling prophecy. You lead a leisurely and relaxed life. You would prefer to sit back and smell the roses than indulge in high energy activities. You prefer familiar routines and for things to stay the same. You can tend to feel uncomfortable with change. You do not like to claim that you are better than other people, and generally shy from talking yourself up, however you are not affected strongly by human suffering, priding yourself on making objective judgments based on reason. You are more concerned with truth and impartial justice than with mercy. You take your time when making decisions and will deliberate on all the possible consequences and alternatives.

Just Call Me "Sweetums"

April 25, 2008 | By Heidi | Filed Under: husband | Leave a Comment

My husband calls me cutesy little things like “dear” and “sweetums”. I don’t mind it, but I really don’t like it. I don’t want to be one of those “my cuddly umpkins snoogly woogly” kind of couples.

But then today, he tells me that there’s a Sweetums on the Muppet Show…so, I google and well, here’s the description from the Muppet Wiki.

“Sweetums is a grotesque, hairy ogre who towers above his human and Muppet co-stars. His bulldog-like lower jaw, thick eyebrows, shabby brown shirt, and threatening expression belie his more or less genial nature.”

So basically my husband has been calling me a grotesque hairy ogre. Nice to know. LOL He said he doesn’t see me like that. And he probably doesn’t, but geez. So I’m some hairy beast? That does alot for a girl’s self esteem!!
