Low Blood Sugar Emergency

May 4, 2014 | By Heidi | Filed Under: health, sugarbetes | Leave a Comment

I can now say that I 125% know what a low blood sugar attack (incident?) feels like.

Unfortunately.

I have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes since 2011. My A1-C was ridiculous at like 15 or so and the dr said that my sugar was in the 500’s.

I was immediately put on Insulin and Metformin and changed many of my habits. I brought my sugar down slowly and have remained on the insulin and pills, but have been considered ‘controlled’ for quite a while.

I’ve had issues with sometimes feeling sick when I don’t eat, and I have had some moments where my blood sugar bottoms out after eating something sweet…which was really a strange feeling.

Fast forward to now.

I have been eating different and excising for weeks now and I stopped taking Januvia and went back on the Metformin.

Let’s just say that Metformin and my stomach don’t like each other and I’ve been having some not so lady-like bathroom issues.

I will try to tell this story without giving you all the gory details. (Unless you want them…and then, just ask! lol)

Thursday night I had eaten dinner (a small steak, corn on the cob, a slice of garlic bread, and a side Caesar salad…and a little while later I had a Skinny Cow chocolate bar).

Difference was that I was pretty late eating because I went to the WW meeting and was pretty much starving. I had a 2 pt bar at the meeting while my mom was getting oriented with the program.

I had some issues using the bathroom and finally felt like I could go. While I was on the toilet (TMI, sorry…I know…but I will spare you the details) I started feeling awful.

Like seriously, really, really awful.

I was dizzy. I felt like I was going to pass out. My vision was messed up. I was sweaty. I was anxious. I was shaky.

I didn’t know what the heck was going on!!

And stupidly, I never even thought it could have been a blood sugar issue. But I should have.

I had all the symptoms of low blood sugar from WebMD.

lowsugar

I have anxiety issues, I thought maybe it was that. I tried to breathe. I tried to talk myself down.

I thought maybe I dehydrated myself suddenly and was feeling the effects from that.

I called my husband to bring me my water. That didn’t help.

I was so scared. Seriously, it was worse than when I had a panic attack and thought I was having a heart attack.

I was also afraid that here I am on the eff-ing toilet doing what I was doing and I was going to pass out and then the paramedics would need to not only come into my filthy house, but they would find me on the floor of the bathroom in such a state that omg, I can’t even imagine it.

I called my husband again and he wanted to know if he should call 911. I said yeah, because I had NO clue what was happening to me!!!

At this point, I also asked him to give me a 2 pt WW bar that was nearby.

The operator told him to test my sugar. It was 82. This was after I had already eaten a bit of candy so I don’t know how low my sugar actually was.

And we realized that my husband needs to learn how to test my sugar, in case of another emergency.

At this point, I felt better, so I finished up what I was doing and went to the living room to wait for the paramedics.

They came in and tested my sugar again and it was 93. I felt soo much better at this point.

I didn’t take a ride in the ambulance, but did this open my eyes and scared the crap out of me!! (My husband too!)

I went to the doctor on Friday and she lowered my insulin. Also, I need to test like I am supposed to and she said to eat some protein before bed.

I am to test regularly, write it down, and report back in a few weeks.

I also had expired strips and hadn’t gotten any supplies since 2012. I called my insurance company and got right on that. I also bought a cheap meter at CVS and will leave that one at work once I get my new meter from the supply company.

I also got some glucose tablets to keep in my purse and at home, I got some hard candy for both also, and I got some diabetic friendly bars to keep in my purse. Just in case.

I am feeling 100% better now, and seriously have had an eye opener on how scary Diabetes can be.

I get it now though, and am going to get back to testing as I should.

Till next time…

Weekly Weigh In – Week Three

May 2, 2014 | By Heidi | Filed Under: health, Weighing In | Leave a Comment

wwweighin3

So the third weigh in has come and gone.

I had another loss this week!

3.1 pounds loss for a total of 14.7.

I’m almost at the 15 pound mark!!

What I did this past week:

I am still following Simple Start and I’ll be completely honest and say that I didn’t start my week out all that great.

My mother in law made us stuffed cabbages or Gołąbki as my husband and his family call them. And I may have ate my weight in them two nights in a row. I am not proud of this, but they are delicious and they can’t be all THAT bad.

I moved on tho, and got it back together for the rest of the week. Weekends are hard for me though.

There’s the possibility I may go out to eat and I don’t really think I’m at the point where I can confidently go out and make great choices. I mean, I try for sure, but I don’t really know how to count what I eat.

Speaking of counting, I didn’t this week. I started to and then I just didn’t really track anything.

I need to get back on that. I will work on it this week.

I have also been walking during my lunch and break at work. I walk up the structure. It’s 6 floors and this week most days I was there (Mon I was off) I walked it twice. Luckily it was chilly out this week, so I didn’t get too sweaty. Soon though, I will need to walk in the building to stay cool.

Here is my fitbit dashboard for the past week:

fitbitdash

My profile is here if anyone wants to follow me on fitbit. Right now my goal is 5000 steps. I plan on setting that higher as I work up to more steps.

I have been thinking though that if I were walking on a flat surface for a half hour a day and not up a slanted slope that I’d get more steps in.

May have to test that theory next week.

So what did I eat this week?

Nothing new really. I made steel cut oatmeal for the week and mixed fruit in it most days with a shot of liquid Skinny Girl Stevia. It was pretty good. I got some vanilla extract to try next week with the fruit. I actually like oat bran a lot more than the steel cut oats but I don’t have enough to make multiple servings, so when I run out of oats I will buy more oat bran.

My husband brought home some already cooked, seasoned deliciously, chicken breasts which were very convenient to just slice up and put in a Flat Out wrap or in a sandwich for lunch. I need to do that myself because it saved me a lot of time getting my lunches together on the days I ate those.

This week I am going to track better and keep on doing what I’ve been doing!

Till next time…

Weekly Weigh In – Week Two

April 25, 2014 | By Heidi | Filed Under: health, Weighing In | Leave a Comment

wwweighin2

Week two…done!

This week I lost again! 2.8 pounds!!

So 11.6 pounds total.

If you know Weight Watchers, this means I got a 10 pound ribbon this week!

This week: I added walking in the parking structure to my daily routine. I started walking in the structure on my lunch or breaks during the week while at work before we went to Disney world in November. I wanted to lose some weight for the trip and get back into the swing of walking. I had a number of shoe issues though, which included giving myself HUGE blisters and buying and returning 2 pairs of shoes. I finally just brought my old pair and killed them. I haven’t worn them since. I loved those shoes too!

Anyway, so I started walking. All this week I walked up the structure from the third floor to the sixth and then took the elevator down to 1 and walked back up to 3. Next week I think I may start at one and then walk up to six and then down to three or down further. I think last year I was up to walking all the way up and down it at least once. People walk inside the building but I get too warm and don’t like people to see me walking. Maybe I need to not care about that. Funny, that’s what bothers me.

I ate ok this week. Saturday I went out with my mom and two of my aunts. Dinner wasn’t the best eating and points wise, but I’m learning. I can see how going out may be a challenge. And Easter was ok too.

Overall the biggest thing I struggle with is still breakfast. I may need to steer away from traditional breakfast foods and go more towards like an egg salad sandwich on a thin sandwich round and a piece of fruit or the sandwich with yogurt and fruit. I did make steel cut oats on Sunday and ate them most of the week and I do really like Oat Bran with fruit. My favorite has been oat bran with cinnamon and canned (in 100% fruit juice) peaches. I think I may have wrote about that last week.

I don’t struggle with eating breakfast, I struggle with just the oatmeal being enough food to keep me until lunch or not feeling hungry again in an hour. So then I add an egg or something with protein and then I feel like it’s too much. I don’t know. Still a work in progress.

This week I will try to just stay focused on program and try new foods and food combos.

Till next time…
